You will be surprised to know what dog treats can do!

Dog treats, when fed wisely, can do wonders in a healthy upbringing of your fur baby! If you are a dog parent, you must know the role that good treats play in your dog’s life.

Dog Training

Dog Reward

Studies have proven that around 90% of dogs are motivated by food, making treats the most effective reward to offer.

Expert dog trainers suggest that good dog treats can double up as a considerably productive dog training tool. This is because they see treats as a ‘reward’, a language that your dog clearly understands, thus leading to an effective training session.

Ensure to reward them only when they display good behaviour, thus they associate a certain kind of action with the reward they receive. They will gradually understand the kind of behaviour expected out of them. Consider treats for dog training.

Dental Health

A less attended but very important fact- dogs can suffer from gum diseases like humans, which could lead to loss of appetite and further dental damage among other problems. Therefore, opting for dog treats that improve their teeth and gum health is important. Chew bars make good treats for this purpose.

Chewlicious is one such treat that has been proved to be effective in removing plaque and tartar. It keeps gums strong and healthy.

A way of bonding

Dog treats are an excellent option to make a bond with your dog. Dogs are just like kids, for them, treats equals love and smiles. This is especially in the case of new dogs, who need time to get comfortable in their new homes and with their new family members.

Nutritional Needs

Some dog treats are meant to complement your dog’s nutritional needs, especially if your dog is a fussy eater. In this case, what you need to check is how a certain treat helps in fulfilling your dog’s nutritional need.

Chip Chops, for example, is one treat advised for a pet for their protein intake. However, it must be fed to a dog who is older than 3 months.

Healthier Dog = Happier Dog

The most important factor here is that treats are associated with the feelings of happiness in dogs. Giving the right dog treats that not only nutritionally benefit them but excite them is always a good idea. After all, there’s nothing better than a smiling dog, won’t you agree?

What to consider when giving treats to your dog?

The nutritional needs of a dog are fairly based on their age, breed, and other factors. However, there are some general things to consider :

  • Make sure the treats are free from anything that your dog is allergic to.
  • Feed such dog treats that are free of corn, wheat, and soy.
  • Feed treats that have limited ingredients but with good nutritional value.

But, hold on! Before filling your dog’s tummy with their favourite treats, there are some precautionary measures that you must consider. Read on to know.

“If you’re not careful, these dog treats can add a substantial amount of calories to your dog’s otherwise normal, healthy diet,” suggests Tami Pierce, DVM, a clinical veterinarian at the University of California, Davis.

  • Low-quality treats can potentially give your pet a tummy congestion with unhealthy fats, excess salt, and sugar, artificial flavourings which can cause their health to deteriorate.
  • Over-feeding of treats can cause weight gain. Canine obesity is a serious health problem affecting a majority of dogs. It not only decreases their lifespan but also affect their quality of life.
  • Never give a treat to a dog when they are over excited as this gives them a wrong impression that they will receive treats whenever they want some.

Like in every case, moderation is the key here as well. There is a universal rule of giving a treat to your dog- The dog treats and snacks MUST not constitute more than 10% of a dog’s daily calories. It might be a tough call for you to calculate, so considering a veterinarian or a nutritionist regarding the same is the best option for you to avoid giving treats the wrong way to your dog.

On that note, give enough treats and love to your little fur babies.
