Is My Cat Too Fat?

We humans are getting fatter – but do you know that even cats can be overweight? For the hunter cat, which is naturally agile, being overweight is just as harmful as it is to us humans. Too much bacon on the ribs stresses the joints, the metabolism is disturbed and it begins a vicious circle: If your cat is too fat, she reluctantly moves and continues to grow; but what about a “diet plan” for overweight cats?

Why Cats Become Overweight?

The life of our cats has changed dramatically over the last millennia. Wildcats and free-living ‘tigers’ care for their own food and are on their feet round the clock. In the apartment, however, stub tigers often lack the right stimuli to make them move sufficiently. In addition, nutritious food often comes in abundance. For example, many cat owners feed dry food to their cats offer around the clock; in addition to the daily portions of wet food. No wonder many cats are overweight!

How To Determine That Your Cat is Too Fat?

You can follow the following rule of thumb:

In heavily underweight cats, ribs and vertebrae and pelvic bone can be seen with the naked eye. When viewed from above, the cat shows a strong waist. For underweight cats, ribs and vertebrae are easy to palpate. When viewed from above, the cat has a tight waist. Ideal is normal weight: the ribs are to feel but not visible. The cat has a recognizable flank fold and a slight waist when seen from above.

In case of overweight cats, the ribs are hidden under a thicker layer of fat. The fat on the rounded stomach also moves when running, it is hardly a waist anymore recognizable. If it comes to strong overweight, the ribs are barely palpable. Adipose tissue hides the waist and makes the flanks and face look round. The cat becomes cumbersome, she reluctantly moves, spends a lot of time sleeping, and possibly eating more. Indeed, A never-ending vicious circle!

So here is recommended action – If your cat is too fat, the cat’s body is heavily loaded. The first step is to provide more exercise. Play with your cat and animate them with a nice cat tree, a cat fishing rod and possibly new toys to move. By the way:  cat toys can be found in PetSutra’s online shop!

The Right Diet

In order for your cat to slim down, exercise therapy should be accompanied by a sophisticated nutritional concept. But caution is advised here: Cats are very sensitive to spontaneously release fat reserves! The radical fat loss can lead to a so-called “hepatic lipidosis”, or as it is addresses by a layman: “fatty liver”. In addition, overweight cats need less calories, but just as many vitamins and minerals as their more active conspecifics. A better solution is feeding foods that are tailored to the needs of overweight cats and gently support them to lose weight, without affecting their overall health.

Meanwhile, the market offers many light-feed products for overweight cats. These foods are calorie-reduced, but provide enough nutrients to keep your cat healthy. Additives such as the amino acid L-carnitine can positively influence the maintenance of weight. A balanced calcium / phosphorus ratio of the cat food is important for the balance of minerals in the cat’s body and can also reduce the risk of urinary tract infection (UTI) and kidney stones. High-quality proteins saturate, thus ensuring a low feeling of hunger.

But “Light” is not always good. Low calorie cat food is available in many quality levels. So do not blindly grab the next light cat food, but take a look at the food label behind the packet. Even with food for overweight cats: As a carnivore, cats need a high proportion of high-quality protein in their diet. They can use carbohydrates in only small proportions. That’s why meat, the most important food staple for our pet cats, should be at the top of the content list. Vegetable by-products or cereals are only a part of the cat food, as they cause the proportion of non-recyclable carbohydrates to continue to rise. These further burden the draining organs of the cat. For by-products, take a closer look:

By the way: Your vet can help you with advice and action during your cat’s diet! He can determine if and to what extent your cat is too fat, and recommend a species-appropriate method to gently degrade.
